S. Antioco Martyr Patron Saint of Sardinia

Traditions

Details and description

Anyone who visits this island cannot fail to know the name of the Saint, or be fascinated by his story. Antiochus, the saint who came from the sea, was born in about 95 A.D., and was taught about Christianity by his mother Rosa. He studied the art of medicine, and became famous in Africa for his treatment of both bodies and souls.

His reputation as a Christian doctor soon led him into trouble with the Roman authorities. Antiochus was subjected to sustained torture and punishment, and eventually exiled to the island of Sulcis by order of the Emperor Hadrian. He founded the first Christian community in Sardinia on this island.

Sant’Antioco is also the patron saint of Sardinia, and if you visit the town in spring or summer you can witness the celebrations in his honour, which take place 15 days after Easter and on August 1st. The Festival has been a traditional fixture ever since 1360. The town really comes alive at this time, with many visitors and a varied programme of events in which culture, history, tradition and entertainment combine, lending a special atmosphere to one of the oldest and most original folk festivals in Sardinia.
