chiesa di Santa Maria Goretti 3

Church of St. Maria Goretti Virgin Martyr

Faith, art and history in the heart of Sant'Antioco

The church of Santa Maria Goretti Vergine Martire is located in an urban expansion area of Sant'Antioco. Built in the late 1950s, it presents itself externally as a compact structure. The façade, with its predominantly horizontal design, follows the slightly inclined course of the two roof pitches in the upper part. In the centre are three entrances, each flanked by slender columns supporting pointed arches of mainly decorative value; this motif is repeated, multiplied, in the masonry above the building, above the numerous windows that illuminate the interior.

The interior has a rectangular floor plan: the wide nave is accompanied on the sides by narrower, lower passages along the perimeter walls. The nave leads to a luminous presbytery, where, on the back wall, Filippo Figari created a mosaic in 1965 depicting the titular saint kneeling in prayer in front of a cross surrounded by hosts of angels.

The church houses an electromechanical pipe organ with two keyboards of 61 notes each and a 27-note pedalboard. The windowed console includes the Grand Organ as the first keyboard, a second expressive keyboard and the pedalboard with unions.
