Church of St Peter the Apostle

Faith, tradition and the sacred link with the sea

La church of St Peter the Apostle is located in the heart of the historical centre of Sant'Antioco. St Peter's is revered as patron saint of fishermenrecalling the evangelical image of the fisherman apostle who attracted the faithful and blessed the sea with an abundance of fish. Every year on 29 June, on the feast day dedicated to him, an evocative procession at seaa boat with a statue of St Peter leads a fleet of boats as a sign of devotion and protection towards local fishermen. This festival reinforces the deep bond between the community, the patron saint and the surrounding sea.

The first structure dedicated to St Peter in Sant'Antioco dates back to ancient times. After various vicissitudes, an incomplete church located in Piazza Umberto was demolished in 1932. The present building was inaugurated in 1967 and is characterised by a façade with a protruding bell tower: a prominent part towards which the roof pitches converge asymmetrically. The left, wider pitch creates a portico under which the main entrance is located. The interior also reflects this asymmetry: on the left is the presbytery chapel, while on the right, near the Eucharistic case, is the baptismal font.

Saint Peter remains a central figure in the cult and religious traditions of Sant'Antioco, a symbol of the deep connection between faith, history and the daily life of the community.
