The Tophet is an evocative open-air sacred area, used from the 8th to the 3rd century BC, where you can grasp the magical and profound sense of religiosity and relive the ancient cults of the Phoenician-Punic civilisation. Inside the site you will find a large number of urns that contained the burnt bones of animals, such as lambs or small birds, but also of children who died at an early age. The young infants, not yet initiated into public life, were entrusted to the special protection of the deities Tanit and Baal Hammon. The urns, carefully placed in the natural cavities of the rock, were accompanied by stone stelae depicting human and animal images, symbols of the complex rituals practised in this sacred area.
