La Laguna

Where the sea meets the sky: welcome to the lagoon

When you arrive on the island, you will be surprised to see a village surrounded by water, a true natural paradise. You may already catch a glimpse of one of the island's iconic specimens: the pink flamingo, whose colourful presence welcomes you to this corner of paradise. After this first encounter, you will realise that you are surrounded by water, on one side the lagoon and on the other the Santa Caterina Pond, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) that protects a unique ecosystem rich in biodiversity. As well as offering spectacular views that will leave you breathless, the pond is home to numerous species of fauna, including: avocets, common and great terns, little terns, black-winged stilts, roseate gulls, shelducks and many others. This area is a privileged destination for birdwatchers, who can observe these wonders of nature up close. Thanks to the cycle and pedestrian path across the pond, you can explore the ecosystem on foot or by bicycle, enjoying direct contact with nature. The rest stops along the route are the ideal place to take pictures that will capture the beauty of this unique place.
