In the dense Mediterranean scrubland that colours the hinterland of the island of Sant'Antioco, live numerous mammals such as the fox, weasel, wild cat and wild boar. And meeting them on your way will not be difficult. While the weasel and the wild cat are present to a lesser extent, the fox and the wild boar are the true rulers of the Antioch land. The fox, in particular, although a wary animal, not infrequently shows itself in some of the island's coves (such as Su Portixeddu), not afraid of the curious glances of bathers. It is almost impossible, however, to encounter the wild boar during the day. But at night it comes out of its burrow in search of food and water: you may hear it roaring through the Mediterranean maquis or even have to slow down with your car when you drive along one of the island's many country roads to let it cross, perhaps followed by its young. Mammals are not the only 'special' inhabitants of the hinterland: the terrestrial tortoise, the grass snake and the newt keep them company. And then, finally, a curiosity all of Antioch. You should know that the Toro islet is home to special reptiles, such as the Lucertola Tirrenica (exclusive to the Toro) and the Tarantolino, belonging to the gecko species.
