Marine fauna

Immerse yourself in an enchanted world: At the bottom of the sea!

Sant'Antioco, ça va sans dire, is an island dotted with beaches, coves and creeks. These are often not reachable by man, but only by the many species of marine fauna that populate the healthy, crystal-clear seas surrounding the island. Let's discover them together! Have you ever seen a dolphin from such a close distance that you had the impression you could caress it? It can happen in Sant'Antioco! If you are lucky and you are sailing a boat to discover the waters around Antioch, you might see them a metre away from you: sometimes they decide to approach the boat, accompanying sailors even for long stretches. Or, if you gaze at the horizon from the comfort of the coastline between Capo Sperone and Cala Lunga and, again, luck is on your side, you might admire them as they leap out of the water, offering unique emotions. But you should know that dolphins are not the only ones to show themselves dancing on the waves: the bluefin tuna, in fact, has the habit of appearing on the Antioch coast. When? In summer: huge shoals of the prized marine species transit the seas of the Sulcis Archipelago on their usual route. It is an unmissable occasion! Lobsters and lobsters live in the many fascinating caves that extend below sea level, while the depths of the seabed guard the precious red gold: coral. It is there, at the bottom of the sea, that the sea turtle ('Caretta Caretta'), grouper, swordfish and the infinite varieties of fish that populate the waters of Sant'Antioco also live. Not only fish: the area to the north-west of the island, precisely near 'Stagno Cirdu', is characterised by the rich presence of the Mediterranean mussel, commonly called mussel or mussel, clams, clams, oysters and the Pinna Nobilis, a large bivalve at risk of extinction from which byssus, the 'silk of the sea', can be obtained.
