Are you a fan of unspoilt nature and birdwatching? Know that Sant'Antioco offers enchanting and unique scenery for the practice of this activity! In the south-western part of the island, a small family of islets stands out, of which you will have a privileged view from the Capo Sperone promontory and the coastal area of Peonia Rosa and Torre Canai: they are the Isola della Vacca, with the adjoining Vitello rock, and the Isola del Toro, the most distant and most difficult to access, but no less important for its birdlife. You will be able to admire these naturalistic symbols of Sant'Antioco, under protection for the species of flora and fauna that inhabit them, even at close range, taking advantage of the numerous excursions organised by fishing boat, dinghy or sailing boat. In fact, the islands are the privileged habitat of very rare birds, such as the Queen's Hawk, of which the Isola del Toro is home to the third largest Sardinian colony in terms of number of specimens, of historical importance. Did you know that the species was classified for the first time thanks to the discovery of this colony? A very important event for bird scholars and enthusiasts! And you will discover that this small island is home to a very rare species that, despite the extreme conditions of the habitat - impervious, steep and incredibly arid - has managed to proliferate in spite of everything: the Podarcis tiliguerta toro, a subspecies of Mediterranean lizard, found exclusively on the islet. Smaller than its relative, but decidedly more tenacious, it is dark green in colour, with attractive yellow-green speckles to characterise it. And if you ever want to venture to the islet of Toro, know that it is not afraid of man and there are plenty of them! But the island of the Cow also holds many surprises in store for you. If you decide to admire it up close, here too you may be lucky enough to encounter some rare examples of the Queen's Hawk, or it will be a Greater Berta, a Herring Gull or a rare Bird of Storms that will fly over your head. Who can tell? You just have to experience this thrill for yourself!
