Carignano del Sulcis

Carignano del Sulcis DOC is among the most authentic and unrepeatable taste experiences you will find on the island. A historic red wine, among the most famous in Sardinia. What everyone does not know is that Carignano vines have immense oenological potential. The island's environmental and climatic factors make all the difference! They are the reason for the uniqueness of the vineyards and decisive for the success of the production and for making it so characteristic: the sandy soils are a natural protection against phylloxera, one of the most dangerous parasites for vine cultivation. The brackish wind from the sea, which blows constantly and impetuously at certain times, is a factor that conditions vine cultivation in the Sulcis area, as the alberello form is the only one that is suitable due to its small size and close to the ground. The production, although not excessive in quantity compared to other types, always presents high quality and gradation. But what are the origins of this portentous wine? Given the variety's diffusion in various parts of the western Mediterranean, it is likely that it was the Phoenicians or Carthaginians who introduced Carignano to Sardinia. Equally reliable is the thesis that the grape variety was imported from the Iberian Peninsula from the early days of Spanish domination of the island. Confirmation of this comes directly from popular culture: the Carignano grape is called 'Axina de Spagna', i.e. 'Grape of Spain'. It is therefore certain that the production of Carignano del Sulcis is an ancient tradition with strong identity characteristics, handed down through many generations. It represents excellence and is an invaluable resource for the territory.
