Imagine a spectacular view of the lagoon and the Gulf of Palmas, the breeze caressing your face and the discovery of one of Sant'Antioco's characteristic sites. We are talking about the Savoy Fort, a monument that dominates the entire town centre and has become a symbol of the local community's resistance. It is a fortification built between 1813 and 1815 to give shelter to soldiers and the population threatened by the frequent incursions of Barbary pirates who plundered the villages along the Sardinian coast. The fortress was built using the rock where a nuraghe, still partly visible, and later the foundations of a Punic fortification had been built in the past. Inside you can still find a small powder magazine that stored rifles, cannons and gunpowder, a sentry box and a cistern for collecting rainwater. What are you waiting for? The Fort will reveal to you the most recent history of the island and its heroes.
